Family of three found dead

The decomposing bodies of a family of three were found in a bedroom on the second floor of a three-storey building at Armour Street yesterday evening.

The bodies were those of a man (32), his wife (30) and their 4-year-old son.

Police suspect that the woman had killed her son and husband last Friday (23) before she committed suicide by hanging inside their house.

According to neighbours and the Kotahena police, the decomposing bodies were recovered after one of their relations had broken into the house around 6.15 p.m. yesterday.

Officer-In-charge of the Kotahena police CI Hemantha Owitigama told The Island that there were two syringes near the bed on which the woman’s son and husband were lying. The bed was not disturbed as they had died in their sleep, he added.

He said he believed that the 30-year-old woman would have poisoned the husband and son and killed her self by hanging after a considerable time, as the bodies of the man and child were far more decomposed than hers.

He also stressed that no conclusion could be arrived at until the post mortem was conducted today.

According to primary investigations conducted by police and what the neighbours had revealed, the couple had been running a business in the Colombo market place and had not been able to repay their debts.

Some neighbours told The Island that they had seen people coming there and scolding them asking their money back. They also said that family’s car and van were seized by finance companies.
