Deputy Director General (DDG) (Investigations) of the Health Ministry R. Rahuman is alleged to have occupied the quarters meant for a matron in the Lady Ridgeway (LRH) Hospital. The DDG is also alleged to have acted in favour of the nurses on many occasions, whenever official investigations against them were conducted, a doctor, speaking on condition of anonymity, said.

The doctor said that the official quarters of a matron of the LRH had been occupied by the DDG for a long time.

As the matron willingly had given the quarters to the DDG, who was partial to nurses and had never taken action officially against errant nurses. Although the matron was officially given the quarters in the LRH premises, she had to report for duties from home. This was a flagrant violation of the rights of the nurses.

When contacted DDG Rahuman said that since he was from Galle and had been living in the quarters for a long time, the Health Ministry had given him permission to use the quarters. "If there are allegations against me, you had better clarify with the Ministry. I am not biased in my duties," Rahuman said.

Head of the Public Service United Nurses Union Ven. Morutethtuwe Ananada thera, when contacted for comment, said that the matron was an active member of the PSUNU and she had given her quarters to the DDG. But, she had given him the facility for a certain period of time. "I think that period has passed. As far as I am aware, the Ministry is trying to find a suitable place for the official. I do not think that the DDG performs his duties in favour of the nurses," he said.
