Cabinet approves Dr. Mahipala for DGHS post

Additional Health Secretary Dr. Palith Mahipala was appointed the Director General of Health Services (DGHS) during a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday (28).


The spokesman for the Health Ministry said yesterday that Dr. Mahipala’s name had been amongst those submitted to the Cabinet by the Health Minister and he had been given the appointment as he was the most qualified amongst those interviewed for the post.


The spokesman said that Dr. Mahipala is expected to take up the duties in his new post next week.


Dr. Mahipala who has served as an MOH, the Director of the Ragama Teaching Hospital, as a Deputy Director General and as the Additional Secretary to the Health Ministry has over 16 years of service in the medical administrative field.


He said that the post had been vacant for approximately four months after the retirement of his predecessor, Dr. Ajith Mendis. Health Secretary, Dr. Nihal Jayatilake had supervised the work.


Meanwhile Deputy Director General (Planning) Dr. Wimal Jayantha, who was one of the short-listed candidates for the DGHS post, appealed to the Human Rights Commission (HRC) early this month to ensure that a junior administrator was not appointed to the post.
