CJ summons District Judges, Magistrates for emergency meeting todayDecember 3, 2012, 7:18 am

Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake has directed the Secretary of the Judicial Services Commission, Manjula Thillekeratne, to summon all District Judges and Magistrates to an emergency meeting today.
The Chief Justice directed the Secretary of the Judicial Services Commission to visit his office yesterday to inform all District Judges and Magistrates of the emergency meeting today.
The JSC Secretary has also informed all District Judges and Magistrates to arrive in Colombo applying for leave.
The intended meeting to be presided by the Chief Justice has also been brought to the notice of Justice Minister Rauff Hakeem, who has said that the proposed meeting would cause great inconvenience to litigants and witnesses.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Justice in a statement quoting Justice Minister Rauff Hakeem said it could result in the erosion of public confidence in the administration of Justice and that such a course of action would not be adopted by persons responsible for upholding the rights of citizens in the country. Full text of the Justice Ministry statement: "It has been brought to the notice of Rauff Hakeem, Minister of Justice, that the judges presiding over the District Courts and Magistrates Courts in the country are scheduled to meet on
Monday (3rd Dec) in Colombo and as a result the courts may not function as usual. He states, this would undoubtedly cause great inconvenience to the public especially, litigants and witnesses and also contribute to laws delays and could also result in the erosion of public confidence in the administration of justice. He further says, that such a course of action would not be adopted by persons responsible for upholding the rights of citizens in the country."
