Our duty is to contribute our best for the country - Gotabhaya

KANDY: The utmost respect we could pay our war heroes, who fought for our motherland at the risk of their lives, was to serve our country ourselves with love and commitment, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said at the ‘Ranaviru Upahara Ulela’ organised by the Old Boys Association of Kingswood College, Kandy.

War heroes the world over were honoured in recognition of their services to their motherland without expecting an iota of personal gain, the Defence Secretary said. "Similarly, it was our duty and responsibility to contribute our best for the benefit of our country," he said.

"The ‘war heroes’ had no ambitions of their own, other than protecting their motherland. That was the reason behind the rapid increase in numbers of those who honour the war heroes. We could learn an important lesson from them. Sacrifices, commitment and determination were the lessons we could learn from them. It was doubtful whether many people lead successful lives. Many do not have confidence nor do they possess a sense of determination. Every one of us should have the courage to face challenges. Then only could we have happiness and satisfaction," he said.

Principal, Kingswood College Ranjith Chandrasekera paid a tribute to the Chief of the Armed Forces the President the Defence Secretary and the police for their generous contribution to free the country from the thirty year old turmoil.

A large number parents of Kingswood war heroes was present at the occasion.
