BASL wants lawyer’s attackers brought to book

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka, while condemning the recent threats against its Life Member Gunaratne Wanninayake, called upon those tasked with the responsibility of maintaining law and order, including the IGP, to act fast and bring the culprits to book.

A statement signed by the Secretary of the BASL, Sanajaya Gamage, says that the BASL would remain vigilant over the recent attempt to assault Attorney-at-Law Wanninayake.

Wanninayake hads complained to police that four unidentified armed men attempted to attack him and his vehicle near his residence in Boralesgamuwa on Monday. The complaint has stated that the he was returning home after work when four individuals followed him and threatened him in front of his residence at Pirivena Road, Boralesgamuwa.

Wanninayake is a former Secretary of the UNP affiliated National Lawyers’ Association (NLA).

"The threats of this nature have become a hindrance to our members to discharge their duties without fear of reprisals and that would result in further erosion of law and order in this country," the BASL statement says.¨
