Mother remanded for burying new-born baby

A 33-year-old mother from Akkaraipattu, who allegedly buried a new born infant with the assistance of her paramour (30) and another woman (20), was arrested and produced before the Akkaraipattu Magistrate on December 30 and remanded till January 11 along with the two accomplices.

The Police spokesman told The Island that the body of the infant was recovered on December 29, at the 5th milestone, Palamnagar in the Akkaraipattu police area, where the mother resides. The main suspect is a mother of two children, a girl and a boy aged ten and eight.

According to the police, they had received information regarding the incident around 10.45 a.m. on Saturday and exhumed the body on the orders of the Akkaraipattu magistrate.

The mother had told the police that her baby was stillborn, therefore she buried the infant, a baby daughter with the assistance of the 20-year-old woman and paramour, police said.

However, the police are awaiting the Judicial Medical officer’s report to determine the cause of death, police said.

According to sources, the 33-year-old married woman’s husband was employed abroad. She too had been abroad before she formed an illicit relationship.
