Lethal haul unearthed from property where Biyagama Village owner was killed

By Hemantha Randunu

The Colombo Crimes Division has unearthed a mini-arsenal from the land at Dompe, where the owner of the Biyagama Village Hotel, Ebert Bernard Jayaratne, was hacked to death early this year.

The lethal consignment, found securely packed and buried behind a house on the property, included two claymore mines weighing two kilos each, two grenades and several machete type large knives. One of the grenades found has been identified as the type used by the LTTE.

Along with the haul unearthed, the police have arrested the young watcher of the property. They have so far been unable to determine exactly who had buried it there.

The CCD, which is conducting the probe into Jayaratne’s brutal murder, made the find on a tip off received. The police believe that whoever buried it had done so some time ago.

Jayaratne was killed, early in the morning of February 20, when he visited his property at lower Dompe, by a lone assailant who after knocking him to the ground attacked him with a sharp weapon.
