SLFP lawyers say  new CJ not guilty  of corruption

Newly appointed Chief Justice Mohan Peiris was not guilty of any charges as claimed by the opposition political parties, lawyers attached to the Sri Lanka Freedom Party said yesterday.

Addressing a media conference at the Mahaweli Centre, General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Nidahas Lawyers Organisation Champani Padmasekara said that until he was proved guilty of alleged charges no one could point a finger at him as a corrupt official.

Padmasekera was responding to main opposition, UNP and JVP, claims that CJ Peiris was involved in several corrupt activities in his capacity as head of several government organizations before assuming duties as the CJ.

The senior lawyer said that the former CJ Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake had taken a wise decision to leave her official residence on Tuesday as she was well aware of laws.

"Dr. Bandaranayake doesn’t need to create an anarchical situation in this country," Padmasekera said.

He said that the move to impeach the former CJ was carried out constitutionally.

As lawyers of Sri Lanka they would give their fullest support to the new CJ, Padmasekera said.

Responding to a query, Padmasekera justified the behaviour of some ministers inside the House after Dr. Bandaranayake was deemed guilty on three counts of five which were probed by the Parliamentary Select Committee.
