Uninterrupted power supply to Jaffna soon

*Emergency power supplier Aggreko’s contract terminated

 Over 130,000 householders in the Jaffna district could soon expect to have an uninterrupted power supply following the completion of a new power plant at Chunnakam with a capacity to generate 24 MW, CEB sources said yesterday They said that CEB Engineers had begun to test the generators before a date could be decided the plant to be officially commissioned.

To assist farmers to irrigate their fields utilising electricity the government subsidizes the cost and provides a unit of power at Rs. 11, sources said

The full cost of construction of the new power station, at the old CEB substation site at Chunnakam and the installation of three heavy fuel cost effective turbines, costing over Rupees 900 million, were borne by the Government, they said With the completion of the construction and installation of the new generators and Jaffna being linked to the national grid, the government, on December 31, 2012 terminated the decade long contract with Aggreko Ltd., which supplied 15 MW on an emergency basis and subsequently increased it to 20 MW in 2011 at Rupees 26 per unit, the sources said.
