Rich and poor equal before the law – CJ Peiris

Chief Justice Mohan Pieris, PC, in his ceremonial address yesterday said that he would administer justice fairly and the rich and the poor were equal before the law. Judges were there to serve the people, he added.

CJ Pieris said he had taken over the duties of the office of the Chief Justice with a very simple and humble frame of mind. He called for the corporation of all to extend justice to everybody.

All the judges of the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, High Courts and the District Courts attended the ceremony.

Attorney General Palitha Fernando PC, addressed the assembly on behalf of the official Bar. Razeek Zarook PC, addressed on behalf of the unofficial Bar.

A large gathering of President’s Counsel, lawyers and well-wishers attended the ceremony. The ceremonial court was packed to capacity.

Among the family members present was the 93-year-old father of the Chief Justice. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence, Ajith Nivard Cabraal, Governor Central Bank and Lalith Weeratunga, Secretary to the President were among the well-wishers.

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka boycotted the event.
