SC fixes August dates for hearing appeals

Angulana double murder:

The Supreme Court yesterday fixed August 5, 6 and 8, 2013 for hearing the appeal filed by the four police officers who were convicted of the abduction and the subsequent murder of two youth at Angulana in August 2009.


The police officer were convicted and sentenced to death by the High Court Trial-at-Bar.


Yesterday, when the appeal was called before the Supreme Court, the Counsel for the appellants was granted six weeks to file written submissions. The respondent, Attorney General, was allowed six weeks thereafter to file his written submissions.


President’s Counsel Anil Silva with Nandana Perera appeared for the first accused.


Saliya Peiris appeared with Upul Kumarapperuma for the second accused.


President’s Counsel D. P. Kumarasinghe and Mahendra Kumarasinghe appeared for the third accused.


President’s Counsel Razeek Farook and Amila Palliyage appeared for the fourth accused.


Additional Solicitor General, President’s Counsel Jayantha Jayasooriya, appeared for the Attorney General.


The convicted appellant police officers are K. I. Kumarasiri, T. Newton Nihal, J. D. Nihal Jayaratne and G. A. J. Senaratne.


The date of offence was August 12, 2009.


The deceased youth were M. B. Dinesh Tharanga Fernando and G. Danushka Udayakantha.


They were abducted and shot to death.
