Eminent US Medical Expert to support Colombo Rotary’s Cancer activities

To mark World Cancer Day, the Rotary Club of Colombo has invited leading US expert on cancer control, Dr. Edward E. Partridge M.D. to address a charity dinner on February 14.

The proceeds of the charity dinner will go towards the Club’s Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Project,

Dr Partridge is the former President of the American Cancer Society and is currently Director, University of Alabama Comprehensive Cancer Centre, one of the leading cancer research and treatment centres in the US.

His key areas of interest include cancer control and prevention particularly in relation to breast and cervical cancer, and he has led several initiatives focusing on improving cancer awareness, screening and behavioural modification for cancer prevention and control, whilst also having a strong focus on cancer research.

In Sri Lanka, where cancer ranks amongst the top three Non Communicable Diseases, and is on the rise, there is a need for urgent action to arrest this growing problem. Dr Partridge’s participation will support Rotary’s efforts to spearhead the fight against cancer through the Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Centre in Colombo, operated by the National Cancer Control Program and supported by a leading Corporate, Dialog Axiata PLC.

It is the only comprehensive Cancer Control facility in the country, dedicated to screening, early detection and prevention, and offering its services entirely free of Charge. Since commencing operations, over 22000 individuals have been screened with almost 4000 being identified having symptoms requiring further investigation.

The Rotary charity dinner aims at creating awareness of the criticality of prevention, screening and early detection to arrest the rising incidence of cancer, whilst also gaining visibility for the activities of the Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Centre in this endeavour.
