Mahapola schol payment under review

Higher Education Minister S. B. Dissanayake yesterday told Parliament that President Mahinda Rajapaksa had appointed a special committee to look into the possibilities of increasing the amount paid to undergraduates as Mahapola bursaries.

He was responding to a question raised by DNA MP Anura Kumar Dissanayake as to why the government had not increased the monthly amount of Rs. 2,500 given to Mahapola recipients for years. He pointed out that the Mahapola bursary was Rs. 2,000 and had been increased to Rs. 2500 in 2000.

The cost of living had increased manifold since then, yet the bursary payment had not been increased, MP Dissanayake said.

Minister Dissanayake said that per capita income had increased and a decision would be taken to increase the bursary payments on the basis of recommendations of the Presidential committee.  (SI)
