KANDY – A group of junior staff members attached to hospitals under the Central Province Health Ministry,  during a protest campaign, surrounded the vehicle of CP Health Minister Sunil Kithsiri Amaratunga, while he was leaving the Governor’s Secretariat yesterday 08.

The protesters strongly objected to the provincial Health Minister’s selection of junior staff for promotion as attendants. They accused the Provincial Health Minister of ignoring those who were most qualified to be promoted and selecting unqualified personnel.

They said those who had served for 12 years in the junior grade had been denied promotions. There were even some employees who had put in 18 years service and possessed higher educational qualification but they, too, had been denied promotions.

As the minister drove off, the protesters raised cries and hooted.

However, minister Amaratunga told the protesters that their case would be taken up and promotions effected within a few months. He assured that they would not be discriminated against.

A group of 76 employees have not got promotions.

Letters of promotion as attendants were awarded to 176 by the Central Province Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa. The selection for promotion was made by the Provincial Health Ministry.
