Three killed, ten injured as van runs off bridge


Three persons died and ten sustained injuries when a van in which they were travelling ran off a bridge fell into a 60-foot precipice at Yalkumbura, on the Bibile – Badulla Road, on Saturday night.

The van was carrying a group returning from a funeral at Mitigahatenne, Lunugala, when the mishap occurred. The dead were identified as the Science teacher of Aandaulpotha National School, Dayani Dharshika Wijeratne (39), her daughter T. M. Dewmini Chamalka Indeevari (7), and D. M. Seneviratne (50) all of Aandaulpotha, Mahiyangana.

Thirteen persons had travelled in the ill-fated van. The ten injured passengers were admitted to Bibile and Badulla hospitals. The vehicle ran off the bridge at about 7:30 p.m. when the driver lost control of it. The driver who has suffered a neck injury has been arrested by the police.

The victims had been rescued by area residents after hearing their screams.
