A gang of four thieves assaulted a resident monk of the Dharma Sri Wardanaramaya temple in Devala Road, Maharagama, when he foiled their attempt to steal the temple collection till.
Police spokesman SSP Prishantha Jayakody told The Island that the incident had occurred around 12.15 a.m. and two suspects, in their twenties, from Pannipitiya and Akbopura, had been arrested and remanded till Feb. 20, when they would face an identification parade.
The monk, Ven. Kolongolle Dheerawansa Thera, had heard noises coming from the temple shrine room, where the till was kept and had gone to investigate when he was set upon by the gang.
The injured monk had been admitted to the Sri Jayawardenepura hospital in Kotte and his condition was not serious, the SSP added.
