Pugilists of Kandy dominated the ABA Youth Boxing Championship winning as many as five top positions in both boys and girls categories of the competition concluded at the Sports Ministry’s New Gymnasium at Torrington Square in Colombo yesterday.
The top three positions of the boys overall category and the top two positions of the girls overall category were won by teams from Kandy.
St. Sylvester’s College, Kandy won the Lt. Gen. Jagath Jayasuriya Challenge Trophy in the overall boy’s championship. St. Sylvester’s collected 15 points to beat Vidyartha College to the second place. The latter were the runners up with 12 points. Dharmaraja College collected ten points and were the second runner up.
Pilimathalawa Central College, meanwhile won the girls’ overall championship as they aggregated 17 points. Sri Swarnajothi National College, Kandy were placed second with 13 points. MAS Southern were the second runner up.
D.R.S. Gunasena of Sivali Central, Ratnapura, who defeated B.P. Kumara of St. Sylvester’s College in the Bantam Weight (Under-56 Kgs) was adjudged the best boxer in the boys’ category, while M.M.L. Ziard of Trinity College, who lost his bout ten points to nine was chosen as the best loser of the event.
Meanwhile, in the girls’ category B.G.K. Lalani of MAS Southern won the best female boxer title, while S.G. Samudra Bandara was the best female loser.
The event which started on Friday served as a trial for the ASBA Asian Confederation Youth Boxing Championships 2013, to be held in Subic Bay, Philippines, from March 10-16.
The event was conducted by the Schools Boxing Association of Sri Lanka.
