Over 3400 Lankans living on streets

The Census and Statistics Department yesterday revealed that 3,418 Sri Lankans had no permanent or temporary shelter and they were living on streets.

Director, Population Census and Demography Division, of the Census and Statistics Department, Indu Bandara said that it was revealed in the Basic Population Information report of the Census of Population and Housing 2012.

Mrs. Bandara was addressing a seminar organised to make journalists aware of the Department’s activities, at the Hector Kobbekaduwa Agrarian Research and Training Institute Colombo.

According to the report, the people without houses included beggars and gypsies, she said adding that the data was collected through provincial officers of the department.

The senior statistician said that according to the preliminary report, the total population of the country was 20,263,723 by 2012.

Mrs. Bandara said that the population density per square kilometer was 323.

The highest population density, 3,438 per square kilometer, was recorded from the Colombo District and lowest, 38 was recorded from the Mullaitivu District, she said.
