Youth involved in crime due to parental negligence - AG

Attorney General Palitha Fernando, President’s Counsel participated in the 48" Annual General Meeting of Hendala Susitha Wadana Samithiya (SWS) as the Chief Guest. The Attorney General in his speech said that Crime had increased in the country and theyouth were involved in those crimes, mainly due to illiteracy. Parents must give their children a good education and it is the responsibility of both parents and teachers to keep children under their supervision, guidance and observation. Then the future of the youth in the country will be more promising, he said.

Fernando said that today the news in newspapers, Radio and the TV were all about crimes committed by youth. The responsibility of preventing those crimes lay with the parents and teachers. As they were not vigilant and observant of their children, that situation may not have arisen. "A lot of children had become drug addicts. Some parents discussed their grievances with me. If they are more observant and vigilant this would not have happened," he said.

The Attorney General lauded the free English, Computer, Sewing classes and the free Pre-School and stated that it was a commendable task and it was a pleasure to note that Attorney-at-Law and president of Susitha Wadana Samithiya, Shantha Perera, had come forward to lainch the laudable and noble deed.

"A Buddhist Priest and a Catholic Priest are the patrons of this Samithiya, which symbolize the Racial, Religious harmony in the Hendala area. This was a very important fact. The country will not succeed if the Sinhalese, Tamils, Burghers, and Muslims are divided. Susitha Wadana Samithiya is free from all such divisions. I request the children who are here today, to respect their parents and teachers as their blessings are like God’s blessings," Attorney General Palitha Fernando said.

Stressing the need for a good education for the children, he stated that granting Scholarships by the Samithiya to needy children. to study in the GCE O/L and GCE A/L was laudable. He emphasized that due to parents’ lack of responsibility towards their children, children get involved in Crime.

The new office bearers for the Year 2012- 2013 were selected and once again J. B. Shantha Perera was elected the President.

Hendala Purana Viharadhipathi Higgoda Saddananda Nayaka Thero, Rev. Father Marius Perera, Principal of Nanayakkara Boys’ School, Senior Superintendent of Police Mahesh Perera and Officer-in-Charge, Wattala Police Station Lokuhetti participated.
