Election Secretariat is expected to inform retired General Sarath Fonseka’s Democratic Party (DP) today of its decision on the latter’s application seeking political recognition, well informed sources told The Island last night.

Responding to a query, sources said that Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya was expected to inform the party General Secretary of his decision today (April 1), though the announcement was earlier to be made on April 5.Speculation is rife that the former army chief and defeated presidential candidate General Fonseka will get the long awaited approval.

In the run-up to day’s announcement, polls chief Deshapriya invited former MP Fonseka and two of his associates, MPs, Arjuna Ranatunga and Tiran Alles for talks.

DP sources told The Island that General Fonseka had made representations to polls chief Deshapriya after having received Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka’s (HRCSL) endorsement to his application. Sources said that HRCSL went to the extent of writing to Deshapriya to review the decision of his predecessor, Dayananda Dissanayake, who unceremoniously rejected the General’s application.
