The Chairperson of the Ministry of Defence Seva Vanitha Unit Mrs. Ioma Rajapaksa was present at the occasion.
Toppigala peak (also known as Baron’s Cap) region, in the Eastern province, was once the centre point of some of the fiercest battles that took place during the humanitarian operations. And, as a tribute to all the brave souls who paid the ultimate sacrifice in battle, a one minute silence was observed during the ceremony.
Upon inspecting a guard of honour, the Defence Secretary offered floral tributes at the ‘Commemorative Monument’, erected to commemorate the war heroes who laid down their lives during the battles in the region. Gift packs were also distributed among school children in the area during the event.
During the day, the Defence Secretary declared open an Exhibition Centre which evinces the legacy and the annals of the strategic Toppigala Peak. It also tells about the stages of war on its terrain to the discerning visitors. Dilmah, Sri Lanka’s international tea company had provided support for the project.
