Up Country Lions gained momentum as the Inter-Club Rugby Sevens progressed and it all culminated with the championship win as they overcame Havelocks Sports Club 14 points 12 in a thrilling final played under lights at Havelocks Park yesterday. Up Country Lions maintained an unbeaten run throughout the tournament.

Havelocks SC drew first blood when Lee Kegalle touched down near the right side of the post. But Mithun Hapugoda was unable to convert. Then Up Country Lions hit back when Nigel Rattwatte overcame twin tackles to touch down left side of the post. Sirnath Sooriyabandara did the conversion as Up Country Lions took a 7-5 lead.

Havelocks were poised to take the lead when Sandun Herath made a run and was in a very good position to touch down, but Up Country Lions’ Srinath Sooriyabandara came up with a tackle to prevent the try.

Minutes later Chamara Dabara touched down for Havelocks and when Hapugoda did the conversion they regained the lead. The score was 12 points to seven. At that stage it looked as if Havelocks were going to win, but with seconds to go for the final whistle Nigel Ratwatte again ran some 20 meters and dived near the post and Sorriyabandara was spot on with the kick to give Up Country Lions the lead and with that the championship. The final score was 14-12.
