Consultant physicians employed at the Sri Jayawardenepura Hospital earn millions while the hospital is running at a loss, Minister of Health Maithripala Sirisena says.

He told The Island that the consultants had made it a big business while the hospital had been ruined due to numerous malpractices. The report of an inquiry, conducted by Deputy Health Minister Mahinda Amaraweera, had been handed over to Minister Sirisena last week and he promised that action would be taken against errant officials and and the situation remedied.

Minister Sirisena said that he was contemplating converting the Sri Jayawardenepura Hospital into a one hundred percent government-managed hospital.

The Health Minister appointed three government nominees (Kiran Atapattu, Mahinda Samarasekera and Dr. Harsha Samaraweera) to the Board of Management, which is headed by N. W. E. Wijewantha, while the others comprise Dr. D. L. De Lanerolle (who is also the Hospital Director), Dr. R. L. Satharasinghe, Dr. V. K. P. Indraratne, Dr (Mrs) Anula Wijesundera, Dr. Ajith Mendis and Professor Rizwie Sheriff.

The Board on August 20 decided to standardize the rates charged by consultants, but the decision was reversed on September 17, in the absence of the three government nominees.
