WPC member Ajith Mannapperuma to succeed him

Western Provincial Council member Ajith Kumara Mannapperuma will succeed Dr. Jayalath Jayawardana, who passed away, at a hospital in Singapore, in the early hours of yesterday.

Mannapperuma, who contested the 2010 Parliamentary General Election on the UNP ticket from the Gampaha District, obtained 44,812 preferential votes and topped the list of unsuccessful candidates.

UNP Deputy General Secretary and Gampaha District parliamentarian Dr. Jayalath Jayawardana passed away following heart surgery. He had been suffering from a heart ailment during the past few years.

Well known physician cum politician, Dr. Jayawardana entered politics through the UNP youth  organization and served as a Parliamentarian since 1994.

An old boy of De Mazenod College Kandana, Dr. Jayawardana, and passed out from the Colombo Medical Faculty.

He was the personal physician to late President Ranasinghe Premadasa and his family.

Dr. Jayawardana was appointed as the Minister of Rehabilitation, and Resettlement in the 2002 – 2004 Ranil Wickremesinghe government.

He served as the UNP organiser for the Negombo electorate until he died at the age of 59.

Dr. Jayawardana leaves behind his wife, son and daughter.
