Afghan’s body washes ashore

The body of 31-year-old Afghan national, who went missing on Monday afternoon, while swimming in the sea, off Eththukala in Negombo, was found over 24 hours later.

It had been washed ashore yesterday evening behind a tourist hotel, about 100 metres, from where he disappeared. The area is experiencing rough sea conditions.

Life guards aided by the Eththukala Tourist Police conducted search operations following the Afghan’s disappearance.

Police spokesman SP Buddhika Siriwardana told The Island that the victim, Mohammed Naufur Ali, had been lodging a guest house at Lewis Place on a tourist visa since May 21.

He had been bathing in the shallow sea off Golden Beach Hotel at Eththukala around 2.45 p.m. on Monday (3) with a friend at the time of the tragedy, he said.

The body is lying in the Negombo mortuary. The relatives of the deceased were informed via the Foreign Ministry. Afghanistan does not have an Embassy in Sri Lanka.
