Certain law enforcers involved in killings – UNP

By Zacki Jabbar

Certain law enforcement officers were involved in contract killings, the UNP alleged yesterday.

The rule of law had deteriorated to dangerous levels and contract killings had become a business for some public servants, the General Secretary of the UNP, Tissa Attanayake said in Colombo.

The crime wave, he noted had reached unprecedented levels with a rapid increase in rapes and robberies which sometime ended in people getting killed.

There was an urgent need to de-politicize public institutions and the only way would be to re-establish all the independent commissions including those that governed the Police and Public Service, if the dangerous and unhealthy trend was to be halted, the MP said.

He observed that due to constant political interference some in the police force had gone scot free away after committing the most heinous of crimes.

The war, was long over and there can be no excuses for not being able to take control of the law and order situation, Attanayake said.

He noted that those in authority did not care about the public’s security and well being as long as they lived a comfortable life.
