JVP not interested in UNP’s new constitutional formulation

Economic issues more important –Vijitha Herath

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) yesterday denied that it intended to discuss the UNP’s new constitutional formulation, saying that economic issues were more important.

Asked about reports attributed to the UNP General Secretary, Tissa Attanayake that the two parties were scheduled to meet, but a date was yet to be fixed, JVP MP Vijitha Herath told the "Sunday Island" that the UNP’s latest move did not interest them."You cannot alleviate the sufferings of the poor by changing constitutions", he said adding they would not waste their time on issues that did not concern them.

The MP noted that reducing the cost of living, which had skyrocketed beyond the reach of the common man, was what concerned them most and they would continue with their protest campaigns.

Questioned about the ongoing debate about diluting the 13th Amendment, Herath said that too was a waste of time.

There was no need for devolution. 13-A should be scrapped and all communities given equal rights, as guaranteed by the constitution, he pointed out.
