The Nuwara Eliya town and its environs were plunged into darkness around 1.30 am yesterday after strong gusts of wind toppled a transformer and damaged power lines, officials said.

The power transformer collapsed near Gamini Maha Vidyalaya on the Nuwara Eliya-Welimada road. The roofs of many houses were also damaged by the gale force winds which developed after midnight but subsided by morning.

Power was restored to a section of the town by afternoon yesterday, Chief Electrical Engineer, Chandrasiri Jayaratne said, while expressing confidence that disrupted services could be totally restored by evening.

"We are working on the job", he said.

Nuwara Eliya HQI Chief Inspector Kamal Ranaweera advised motorists to exercise caution as a blanket of thick fog has enveloped the area.

Visibility is poor as the fog is so severe and widespread, he said. "There has to be extreme caution driving in these adverse weather conditions".

A landslide on the Nuwara Eliya-Ramboda road was cleared by the police on Friday.
