Sri Lanka’s emerging middle distance runner, Tharaka Fonseka won two golds in what turned out to be his first international competition, as Sri Lanka’s team of five athletes bagged three golds, two silvers, and one bronze at the 75th Singapore Open Athletics Championship, which concluded on Sunday, according to the results posted on its official website.

Fonseka, nicknamed ‘Bolt’ won the men’s 800 metres and 1,500 metres ahead of Korean, Philippine and Vietnam runners. Fonseka returned a time of 1:52.83 seconds to win the 800 metres, ahead of Hong In-Gi of Korea and Le Thanh Hung of Vietnam. He clocked three minutes, 55.26 seconds to win the 1,500 metres.

While Eranga Dulakshi won the women’s 800 metres (2:09.98sec) gold and 400 metres hurdles silver (62.17 sec), national long jump champion, Milantha Sampath Dissanayake cleared 7.76 metres to win the silver, behind Japan’s Oiwa Yuhi, (7.86 metres).

Emerging 400 metres runner Chanaka Jayasekara won silver medals in the men’s 200 metres (21.71 sec) and 400 metres (47.54 sec).
