Teacher in charge of discipline at the Nawagattegama Issuru School, Priyani Herath, who was forced to kneel down by a member of North Western Provincial Council, yesterday requested for a transfer to Nawagamuwa Maha Vidyalaya in the Puttalam Education Zone.

Herath said that she had already got a transfer to a nearby school, but to get there she had to go past the Nawagattegama Issuru School.

"I’m in fear as I have already been threatened," she said adding that the Nawagamuwa Maha Vidyalaya was the most suitable school for her.

Herath said that she could go to that school by a different route.

North Western Provincial Council member Ananda Sarath Kumara, forced this teacher to go down on her knees, after she advised his daughter to lengthen her school uniform. The suspect councilor has been remanded by the Puttalam Magistrate until June 27 over the incident.

Meanwhile, General Secretary of the Educational Professionals’ Association Wasantha Dharmasiri alleged that education authorities had tried to dissuade witnesses from giving evidence in the case.

He claimed that thr Puttalam Zonal Education Director, who visited the school last week, had asked three eyewitnesses at the school not to give evidence.

When contacted for comment, Puttalam Zonal Education Director Nimal Bandara however denied the accusation.

He said that he had visited the school and asked eyewitnesses to prepare to give evidence.

Bandara said they could consider the teacher’s request for a transfer to the Nawagamuwa Maha Vidyalaya.

If she makes a request, I can send it to the Provincial Education Director for approval," Bandara said adding that they were willing to do justice to by the victimised teacher.
