Kidney diseases are fast spreading in Laggala; many patients have been reported from the  Wilgamuwa Settlement.

Kidney patients have to undergo numerous hardships since the Hettipola  hospital does not have a dialysis machine.

It has caused problems to the hospital staff as well.

Patients have to visit private hospitals for dialysis.

Chairman of  the Wilgamuwa Pradeshiya Sabha Jayantha Weerasekera said that there were around 1, 200 kidney patients in the area, but the number  could be more as there were some patients who had not visited hospital for treatment.

"Patients are required to undergo dialysis twice a month and most of them are from low income groups and it is a big issue for them as they are in dire financial straits." he said.

Only about Rs. 300,000 was needed to purchase a dialysis machine. Though the authorities had been requested to provide the hospital with a machine, no action had been taken, he said.
