Amara Hewamadduma passes away


Former Government Agent, literary figure and historian Amara Hewamadduma, passed away at the age of 73 after a brief illness at a private hospital in Colombo yesterday morning.

An alumnus of Rahula College, Matara and the University of Peradeniya, Mr. Hewamadduma was a prolific writer. He authored dozens of books on various subjects and contributed columns to newspapers besides taking part in TV and radio programme. He also served as the Chairman of the Ceylon Transport Board prior to retirement and as Secretary to several ministries including Cultural Affairs.

Mr. Hewamadduma leaves behind his wife Sandapali, daughters, Ruwanmalee (formerly of the banking sector) and Bimba (Attorney-at-Law), son, Kosala (Brand Manager of Unilever International), sons-in-law, Sujeewa Rajapakse (President of the Chartered Accountants Association of Sri Lanka) and Hemaka Senanayake (Attorney-at-Law) and daughter-in-law, Wasana.

His remains lie at 10/2, Wijayaba Mawatha, Kalubowila and the funeral will take place on Sunday (June 30) at 2.00 p.m. at the Kohuwala Cemetery.
