A farmer of Track One, Mahakandarawa, in Mihintale, happened to unearth human skeletal remains while digging his land for cultivation purposes on Friday.

The farmer, S. M. W. Seneviratne (45) informed the Mihintale police of the find.

The Mihintale police visited the site and informed the Anuradhapura Magistrate’s Court. Acting Magistrate Amarasena Hettige arrived at the place where the bones had been dug up on Saturday (29) and held a magisterial inquiry.

The Acting Magistrate ordered police to dig up the site and search for any more skeletal remains and send the parts of bone to the JMO Unit of the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital for further investigations. He also ordered the JMO to submit a report to the Anuradhpura Magistrate’s Court in this regard.

A spokesman for the Mihintale police said that the bones were so old that they could not say for sure whether they were human or not. Parts of an old clay pot, too, had been found from the same place, the police said.

According Seneviratne’s statement to the Mihintale police, his parents settled down there in 1963. He had been living on the land since his birth but to the best of his knowledge neither a human nor an animal has been buried there.
