Special care units for abused women, children open

The Health Ministry yesterday inaugurated Sri Lanka’s first special care units for abused women and children at De Soysa Maternity Hospital (DZMH), and Castle Street Hospital for Women. The Unit called ‘Mithuru Piyasa,’

The spokesman said that women and children who were victims of abuse and rape underwent further stress when they were forced to stay in wards with other patients. They were forced to be under the scrutiny of prying eyes and the questions of other occupants in the ward and even relatives of patients who visited the ward.

The Unit would provide the seclusion, the care and the counseling required by these victims, the spokesman said. He added that more Mithurupiyasa Units would be established in other major hospitals countrywide even to treat abused men.
