Media warned not to promote contaminated milk powder

Director General of Health Services Dr. Palitha Maheepala yesterday instructed all media organisations to refrain from publishing/telecasting/broadcasting milk food advertisements from companies whose products are suspected to be contaminated.

Dr. Maheepala, asked for comment, stressed that certain milk products had been advertised in the media in a misleading manner aggravating public concerns.

GMOA President Dr. Anuruddha Padeniya,  when contacted for comment, expressed doubt whether a proper mechanism to withdraw the condemned milk powder in the market had been launched by the Health Ministry as some of the milk products such as Anchor milk powder, cheese and butter, diamond milk products and Maliban milk products continued to be sold in the market. "On Tuesday the Health Ministry accepted the ITI investigation report and to refer all food items to the ITI for testing. The GMOA is monitoring the milk withdrawal process at the moment and how the Ministry is tackling this issue."
