Minister says money wins elections

Irrigation and Water Resources Management Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said that the entire political structure had been so commercialised that politicians, who really worked for the party were forgotten while those who spent lavishly were getting preferential votes.

Some media had been claiming that the SLFP was swayed by nepotism and family bandysm in nominating candidates. But, he had never brought any relatives into politics. It was the voter who promoted family bandysm and nepotism in politics, the minister said, adding that it was the right of any grassroots level person to change this practice.

Minister de Silva was speaking at a Central Province Election meeting at the Kandy Pushpadana Balika Maha Vidyalaya recently.

Minsiter de Silva pointed out that the UNP and other Opposition parties would get defeated at the forthcoming polls once again. Those parties were criticizing the government for what they called buying their members. The government did not want to buy any Opposition parliamentarians as it was strong enough. But, under the democratic framework, any politician attached to any party could join the SLFP as long as he or she complied with the SLFP policies. The government would not hesitate to enlist the support of anyone who was willing to work in the interest of the party and the country, the Minister said.
