Recent news reports said that the Cultural Affairs and Arts Ministry had spent Rs 400,000 on 40,000 betel leaves presented to Veddah Chief Uruwarigelage Vannila Eththo to mark the International Indegenous People’s Day, but sources said that the betel leaves had been donated by well wishers.

Members of the Veddhah clan said that though the Cultural Affairs Ministry said that it would deliver the promised pickup truck to Vannila Eththo on August 9, the officials had failed to keep the promise and instead their Chief had received only betel leaves, tobacco and arecanut.

The celebrations were held at the Veddah habitat Henanigala with much fanfare last Friday.

Ministry sources said that the double cab which the government promised the Veddah Chief would be presented later on.

The Veddha Chief is using a vehicle from the Mahiyangana Pradeshiya Sabha for official purposes.
