N’cholai doubling output and stopping hydro plants:
Govt. version differs from CEB’s

Reference our front page lead story yesterday (13), ‘N’cholai doubling output too much to be absorbed: Hydro plants likely to be shut down’, a government spokesman said last night that under no circumstances would the cheap hydro electricity generation be suspended.

However, contacted for comment, Greater Colombo City Transmission and Distribution Loss Reduction Project Manager, Senior Engineer, Nandika Pathirage, said in case of excess coal power generation the Ceylon Electricity Board would have to stop the hydro plants.

Asked to explain why the CEB would have to do so, Pathirage said coal fired power plants could not be often de-loaded; full load meant high efficiency. If they were stopped, their efficiency would be greatly reduced whereas hydro plants could be stopped at any time without any such problem, he added.
