Ministerial probe into milk issue

by Dasun Edirisinghe

A proposal to appoint a ministerial committee to handle the milk powder issue would be presented to the Cabinet today, Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena said yesterday.

The ministers said that the government had already ordered the respective companies to remove their milk powder and milk supplements, imported from New Zealand and Australia, which contained an agro chemical called dicyandiamide (DCD), harmful to human health and as bad as arsenic.

Minister Sirisena was addressing a media conference at the Sri Lanka Freedom Party headquarters.

"Our tests have proved that the milk powder is contaminated with DCD and further tests need to be done," he said, noting that the government at the same time would not allow the creation of a milk powder shortage in the market.
