LPBOA determined to increase bus fares

Private bus owners are determined to go ahead with their plan to increase bus fares from Sept. 1 though the National Transport Commission (NTC) has threaten legal action against such arbitrary revision of bus fares.

Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association (LPBOA) President Gemunu Wijeratne yesterday reiterated that from Sept. 01 his association would implement the ten per cent bus fare revision. They were not worried about NTC Chairman Roshan Gunawardena’s threat that he would take legal action if fares were increased.

Wijeratne told the media yesterday, at the National Aesthetic Education center in Colombo that the National Transport Commission Act did not have a provision allowing legal action to be taken against an LPBOA decision to increase bus fares.

A fare hike should have been implemented by the NTC from July 1 2013, the LPBOA chief said.

Wijeratne claimed that the NTC Chairman was a law unto himself and did not have any qualifications to hold that position. "I challenge Chairman Gunawardena to show any provision in the NTC Act which empowers him to take legal action against the LPBOA," said Wijeratne.
