Police to prosecute Opposition protesters

By Hemantha Randunu

Police headquarters yesterday said that the judiciary would be moved against UNP and other Opposition activists for launching a protest march in Colombo on Wednesday in violation of a court order.

A senior police official told The Island that the court had ordered that the protest be confined to the area opposite the Fort Railway Station. In spite of Court expressly prohibiting a protest march, the UNP had gone ahead with it, the official said.

Responding to a query by The Island, UNP MP Harin Fernando said that a section of the protesters had walked to the Presidential Secretariat to hand over a petition, demanding action against those responsible for recent Weliweriya killings.

The MP emphasised that there was no basis for the police headquarters’ allegation that the UNP had violated a court order.
