National Freedom Front (NFF) leader Wimal Weerawansa, MP warns the public that those who have bribed their way into political office over the years are not interested in public welfare.

Addressing a propaganda rally at the Shirley Corea memorial hall, Chilaw in support of NFF candidate, Samansiri Herath contesting the North Western Province on the UPFA ticket, Minister Weerawansa on Tuesday stressed the importance of electing some genuine representatives. Although a people friendly administration was in power, there were shortcomings which could be rectified, the minister said.

Minister Weerawansa said: "Voters should strive to elect those committed to the implementation of people friendly policies. The electorate should realise there is a severe dearth of genuine politicians. Those who lavishly spent during campaigning to secure political office end up making money."

Former JVP heavyweight alleged many sectors of the national economy needed to be rectified. The ongoing effort to push the post-war economy towards the correct path was a challenging task. Those who had entered politics for their benefit would never represent the interests of the masses. They would never throw their weight behind our efforts to revive the economy, the minister said, urging those struggling to make ends meet to exercise their franchise wisely.

The minister pointed out that ongoing major development projects would bring immense benefits to the people. Commenting on major road construction projects, including the proposed Kandy-Jaffna highway, minister Weerawansa said that since the conclusion of the conflict in May 2009 the government was making a bid to further improve travel between the South and the North.
