Superintendent of customs of RTF Parakrema Basnayake told The Island that they had been informed that the warehouse, where unaccompanied luggage was kept before being dispatched to owners employed overseas, contained the milk food. The names of three individuals had been used to dupe the customs and racketeers had also declared the boxes, containing the milk food, as ‘personal effects’. The value of the seized items is around Rs. 1.5 million.

He said that the products were American but had been sent from Dubai.

According to information gathered, the high protein milk powder and liquid products were being consumed by rugby players addicted to them as the products were considered helpful for muscle building, he said.

The investigation is being held under the direction of Director of Customs, Mali Piyasena to ascertain why the racketeers attempted to smuggle the contraband into the country and who the real smugglers are.
