Grade 5 Scholarship exam bungling:
Examination Chief calls for report

By Dasun Edirisinghe

The Department of Examinations has called for a report from the Southern Province Education Director following allegations that Sunday’s (25) Grade Five Scholarship Examination was not conducted properly at two centres in Galle.

Exams Chief W. M. N. J. Pushpakumara told The Island that there had been two incidents, one at the Heenatigala Sariputhra Vidyalaya and the other at Bataduwa Rathanajothi Vidyalaya, but the supervisors had settled the problem in three minutes and gaven the candidates an additional 10 minutes to answer the papers.

"However, according to several media reports, students who sat the examination are not satisfied with the solution and I h ave called for a report regarding the incidents," he said.

Southern Province Education Director Jayatissa Block said that he had already directed officials to probe the alleged incidents.

"We will release the full report of the inquiry to the media after the investigation is over," he said.

Meanwhile, the pro–JVP Ceylon Teachers’ Service Union (CTSU) alleged that examination staff had first delivered the papers without considering seating arrangements and within ten minutes they had to collect the papers again and redistribute them according to the order and in the process some answer scripts had got mixed up.

CTSU General Secretary Mahinda Jayasinghe said that one student had answered more than 10 questions when the papers were taken back.

Then, that paper had been given to another student.

"If the papers had been distributed properly the supervisors should have noted it and sent it with the answer scripts to the department," Jayasinghe said, adding that students had been psychological affected due to their decision to collect and re-distribute the paper.

He said that the supervisor of the centre in the Bataduwa Rathanajothi Vidyalaya had reported for duty late and scolded students as they were already seated when he arrived.

Jayasinghe said that students had got scared.
