Rs. 100 mn for conservation of Kandy’s cultural sites

KANDY – The Ministry of Culture and Arts would allocate a sum of Rs. 100 million to Kandy’s World Heritage City Committee for the conservation of cultural sites, Cultural Affairs Minister T. B. Ekanayaka said yesterday.


He was speaking at a special meeting of the World Heritage City Committee, held at the Kandy Town Hall.


Chairman of the Committee, the Mayor of Kandy, chaired the meeting.


Ekanayake told the Heritage Committee that the allocation could be utilised for the conservation of five historic buildings in the city.


He proposed that the committee encourage the business community and those engaged in the tourist trade to assist in the conservation project launched.


Among the participants at the meeting were Central Provincial Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa, Deputy Mayor of Kandy Sena Dissanayake and members of Municipal Council, Municipal Commissioner Chandana Tennakoon and the Director General of the Central Cultural Fund (CCF).
