Five-year-old drowns in pit

By Madura Ranwala

A five-year-old boy fell into a pit full of rain water and drowned on Wednesday, while flying a kite, a few metres away from his home in the Nawagamuwa police area.

Police spokesman SP Buddhika Siriwardana told The Island that the victim, Pathum Malshan, of 322/B, Kotalawela, Kaduwela, had been found dead in the pit.

The mishap occurred while the boy’s mother was having a bath. She had been searching for him when she saw his slippers near the pit.

One of the child’s uncles had told the police that Pathum had gone to fly a kite after he watched the cartoon, ‘Ben Ten’.

Officer-In-Charge of the Nawagamuwa police, Inspector Aloka Bandara Senanayake said that the particular land had been used to extract clay for making bricks and therefore there were several deep pits and the child had fallen into one of them.

However, police are conducting a full investigation into the death to ascertain whether there had been any foul play, Senanayake said.

The child has a sister three years older to him and his father is a minor employee.
