WHO confers World No Tobacco Day Award 2013 on Minister Sirisena

World Health Organization (WHO) has conferred the global award to mark Anti Tobacco Day 2013 on Health Minister, Maithripala Sirisena.

The WHO annually selects key people globally who have working hard to wipe out the smoking in the world. They are selected from amongst Heads of State, Ministers and professionals who had worked tirelessly towards anti-tobacco activities.

After Sirisena was appointed Health Minister, Sri Lanka  was able to fulfill its obligation in respect of Article 11 of the regulations, which saw public health warnings  duly gazette in August 2013.

It was the decisive role the Minister played in implementing Article 11 of the FCTC that earned him the World No Tobacco Day Award 2013. He received it from the Director General of the WHO in Geneva.

President Mahinda Rajapakse will participate in an event at the BMICH to felicitate the Minister on his achievement. The full implementation of public health warnings is still an unfinished task as the final determination rests with the Supreme Court.

Health Minister of Thailand Dr. Pradit Sintavanarong, who will be visiting Sri Lanka, will also address the ceremony to felicitate Minister Sirisena.
