More powers for PHIs, FDIs

Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) and Food and Drug Inspectors (FDIs) would be given more powers to check all food items on sale in the market.

A Health Ministry spokesman told The Island that the Inspectors would be vested with more powers under the provisions of the Food Act No. 26 of 1980.

He said that would help the inspectors to be extra vigilant in carrying out post marketing surveillance.

Under the Food Act No. 16 of 1980, more provision would be amended to vest powers in the PHIs and Food and Drug Inspectors to intensify raids on trade establishments and institute legal proceedings against the errant traders, he said.
