A multimillionaire supporter of UPFA candidate, for the North-Western provincial council from the Kurunegala District, Dayasiri Jayasekera, was abducted on Wednesday night, while he was returning home alone in his double cab, by a group of unidentified men. He was found lying unconscious in Anuradhapura by a trishaw driver yesterday afternoon.

A five-member-gang stopped Sarath Ratnayake’s vehicle blocking its path, dragged him out and assaulted him severely before being made to inhale some chemical which made him unconscious.

Anuradhapura hospital sources said that Sarath had been unconscious when he was admitted. The trishaw driver had first taken the victim to the police.

Dayasiri Jayasekera told The Island yesterday that the victim was one of his main supporters,  who even had given him a Hummer vehicle, for his political campaign. He attributed the abduction and assault to an act of jealousy by those who could not stomach Sarath supporting him.

Sarath has, in his statement, told the police that he could not remember what actually happened after he was made unconscious, but he has said that he could remember how he was assaulted by some unidentified men who had arrived in a pickup truck and blocked his path at around 9.00 p.m.

Dayasiri Jayasekera sought even the support of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa following the abduction of his main supporter in addition to alerting police stations in the area.

The police are conducting investigations.
